Today I want to talk about a topic that is currently very relevant in my life and one that I think is sooo important: self improvement.
Being a college student, I have realized now more than ever it is important to focus on yourself. When you are in high school you tend to go with the flow. You have a group of friends that are all similar to you and everybody is focused on impressing everyone else out of fear of not being liked. It really is pathetic when you think about it, but it’s a phase that almost everyone goes through in their life.
College is a whole new ball game. You get to walk into the first day of classes with a clean slate. Nobody knows you. There is nobody to impress. You get to start over and be whoever you want to be. You will discover your strengths, talents, and interests that might have been suppressed before. You truly have the chance to become the individual you maybe were hiding from for the last 18 years. You are free.
So what do you do with all of this freedom? There are a lot of people who take it and run. They forget that freedom comes with responsibility and end up somewhere dark with nowhere to run anymore. Freedom is a gift that should be cherished and put to good use. Now that you are free, the possibilities for your life are endless, but all of these possibilities start with you. So what are you going to do?
Focusing on yourself is so important for your dreams and there is never a bad time to start. Many people make New Years resolutions, which is a good start, but results are only seen where action occurs. If you don’t act upon your goals, you will never be successful.
At a certain point in your life, there comes a time when you have to ask yourself: what do I want? It’s time to forget about the pressures that come from family, friends, and society and think about what makes you truly feel happy and fulfilled. Seriously–grab a pen and paper and write down what actually makes you excited and thankful to be alive. Those are the things you need to surround yourself with. By choosing the things that make you happy, you are improving yourself.
Take the time out of your day to incorporate the things that make you the happiest. For me, a few of those things are blogging, photography, and adventuring. In the past few months I have been trying to include these things in my daily life as much as I can–and I feel so much happier. I have more motivation, drive, passion, and feel more hopeful than ever before! And it all started with me sitting down and thinking of what I really want out of my life and what it’s going to take it get there.
So no matter where you are in your journey, take the time for yourself. To better yourself and your mind. Surround yourself with the people and things that mean the most to you and watch how your life will transform in front of your eyes!
